Paul Chung has been appointed Chief, Division of General Pediatrics. The Division of General Pediatrics that he will lead has 22 faculty members who supervise students and residents and provide outpatient and inpatient services for children, adolescents, and families in Westwood, Santa Monica, West Los Angeles, and Manhattan Beach.

Paul is also Director of Research and Operations of the Department’s UCLA/RAND Prevention Research Center.

Testing Treatments…for free!

As both producers and consumers of evidence-based medicine, it is interesting to reflect on how this evidence is produced. The book Testing Treatments is part how-to manual, part manifesto. It includes a lot of thought-provoking information about how to conduct research that conducts us toward insight. Although it’s mainly about clinical research, there are many points of overlap with the kind of research we do.

Health Impact Assessment

The field of Health Impact Assessment has received a much deserved shot in the arm with the recent publication of an IOM report on the subject. The committee was chaired by Dick Jackson, and included Jonathan Fielding as a member.

Given the increasing recognition of the wide array of non-medical determinants of health, there is a growing interest in the US in the formal evaluation of the health impacts of new policies and programs. This report shows how to systematize such evaluations. As the US begins to catch up to Europe and other countries in its reliance on health impact assessments, we can expect that more of our students will need the kinds of skills and sensitivity evoked in the report. It is a tremendous feather in our cap to have two members of the committee at UCLA.

Clarified Advancement and Promotion Guidelines

CAP has clarified aspects of the criteria it uses to evaluate faculty for promotions and certain accelerations. Specifically, there are 3 areas in which the Department’s reviews could add more substance, generally to the meaningful advantage of our candidates:

Professional Activity
Contributions to Diversity
Interdisciplinary Research

These clarifications will help reviewing faculty refine the structure of their evaluations in personnel actions even when actions do not go to CAP. While our Department has done an effective job with peer evaluation of faculty achievement, it never hurts to periodically review the criteria that are to be used in doing so.
